Ride Thoughts with Skylar Stegner

Meet Skylar—also known as Solo Sky.
Born and raised on Long Island, I was a competitive gymnast until the age of 16. I’ve always had a passion for defying gravity, beating the odds, and chasing adrenaline rushes. I built my social media presence through authenticity — sharing my journey in gymnastics and calisthenics.
I’ve worked with brands like Do You Even, Band Energy, PSD Underwear, and many more. I love sharing my passions with others.
As a recovering addict, I still like to push boundaries — within my limits. I was looking for something new when I found my love for my bike. I call her Metamorphosis — for many reasons.
I plan to use my form to learn acro stunting and help bring that to the U.S. as a new sport. I have a lot to show and a lot to grow.
I can’t wait to show you.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out riding?
As a new rider myself, I would tell other new riders to make sure they take the endorsement class, to find a bike that suits them well — not just one that’s trendy — and to make sure they’re comfortable. Spend time learning your bike before heading out on the road or joining group rides. I’d also tell them to get gear and wear it whenever they’re riding, as long as they can keep it on. I’m very cautious and love to wear gear because it makes me feel extremely comfortable.
How does riding impact your mental health?
When I drive in my car, I get very angry and bored. When I go on my bike and ride, I enjoy it. I find myself dancing. I find myself swaying with the wind and riding to places I would’ve never gone to if I were driving. Riding gives me a freedom I’ve never had before — and I would never give it up for anything.
Do you prefer riding solo or with a group, and why?
I prefer riding solo — hence the name, Solo Sky, haha. I don’t know how other people ride, and I like to take my bike out when I want to go, enjoy myself, and do things my way. I like meeting people while I’m out riding, but I’m not a huge fan of group rides.
What’s your go-to piece of riding gear?
My NBT Bia 2.0 riding pants, duh.
What does riding mean to you in three words?
It saved me.
What was the moment you knew you were hooked on riding?
The minute I took my bike on the highway and felt the wind while I was riding, I knew I was never going to get rid of it.
If your bike had a personality, how would you describe it?
She’s a sweetheart.
What’s one thing you wish more people understood about riding?
Riding a bike is not like driving a car. You need to be more aware and more accountable. Riding is something you need to take seriously and not take it as a joke.
What’s next for you in your riding journey?
I got a Grom recently! I’ve been a lifelong gymnast and plan to learn acro stunting with my bike!
